Today’s post takes three different living room schemes in turn and explains how to recreate a similar look in your own home.

Refined Yet Cosy Living Room

First up is a living room that despite being refined and sophisticated in its approach has managed to maintain a welcoming and cosy feel. This is achieved by softening statement pieces of furniture, like the studded wingback chair, with an abundance of textiles: check throws sit upon the sofa and wool curtains hang from the windows. The tufted low table is styled with a candle lantern and delicate glassware; these pieces relax the most formal piece of the room. Meanwhile, the opulent, deep wall colouring creates an enveloping feeling in the space, whilst occasional copper and gold accents bring a luxury touch – these accents are perfect for the festive period ahead, too.

(Image via: Ideal Home | Photography by Dominic Blackmore.)

Calming Grey

The second living room has a mid-century theme and calls on a calming palette of blue and grey hues to unify the space. The soft, tapered lines of the mid-century-inspired furniture are mirrored in the tactile textiles, which have been added in the form of throws and an area rug. Warmth is added to the cool colour palette through the throw cushions’ midnight navy accent hue. This accent alone wouldn’t have been enough to anchor the scheme, which is why the graphic wallpaper has been used. This use of pattern pulls together the other softer and more delicate aspects of the room, acting as a backdrop to the iconic form and shape of the furniture. Also, note how the main pieces of furniture have been placed close together – this creates a cocooning effect in the space.

(Image via: Country Homes & Interiors.)

Vintage Vibe

The final space is a great example of how to create a statement feature in a pared-back living room. By hanging an eclectic mix of pictures in differing frames you can create a striking feature in an otherwise unassuming room. This approach is not only perfect for art lovers but also those who often add transient pieces to their spaces. For example, if you created an art wall in your living room you could swap out prints and art works as the seasons, or your tastes, change. Personalised features like these immediately bring a welcoming feel, which makes the room feel warmer even though the colours used are light and airy. Another takeaway tip from this space is how the fireplace has been styled with a stack of logs: filling a vacant space, like a disused fireplace, with objects or a vignette prevents a room from feeling vacant or drafty. Again, you could switch up the display each season: try adding a string of white fairy lights at Christmas or a vase full of freshly cut blooms in the spring.

Title Image via: Homes & Gardens | Photography by Emma Lee.

With the nights drawing in and the clocks set to go back in a matter of weeks, it’s time to turn your attention to making your living room feel comfortable and cosy for the darker and colder days that lie ahead.
