After all they are at opposite ends of the spectrum aren’t they?

The good news is it can be done. In fact it has a name all of its own – transitional. This is the challenge more and more people are looking to meet: the challenge of taking the best modern furniture and looks and meshing them perfectly with traditional looks to get the best of both worlds.

Which homes take on this style best?

If you live in an older property – one dating back a hundred years or more for example – you’re in a great position to take on this interior style. However, it can be replicated in other properties if you take the time to research the style to see how it works.

Look to the past and the present

The trick is to get the right mix of elements in the right areas to avoid the pitfalls of clashing. Very often the flooring used is presented in a neutral shade; typically this provides a nice calm palette on which to bring together the modern and the traditional elsewhere in the room.

Very often this neutral approach works on the walls as well. The main focus with transitional looks is the furniture that appears in the room instead of the canvas of the walls and floors. Keep this in mind to get you started in the right direction.

How to mix things in a striking way

There are plenty of ways to do this when you start looking in this direction. For example, you could have a thoroughly modern leather sofa complemented by an antique coffee table. The colours should be complementary to make it work – for instance, a deep brown coffee table would work well with a brown leather sofa. You might have a bigger challenge marrying a modern sofa featuring a colourful fabric with an antique table if the colours clash rather than sit well together.

Another good example of mixing modern with traditional can be seen with certain sets of tables and chairs. A big modern dining table could work with traditional chairs if chosen carefully.

Focus on the right materials

Sometimes it is the materials you choose rather than the specific items that make this style work. For example, if you wanted a kitchen with both a modern and traditional look you could opt for a granite worktop since this sits rather well with both styles. A similar example would be to use stone for a hearth in the living room. Again this blends well in both areas, so you can use it to bring together a promising style that blends both modern and traditional together seamlessly.

It is a great idea to try this if your home is older than average. However, any interior can be brightened up in an innovative way by using both modern and traditional styling.

Title Image source – www.miss-design.com

If you’re not au fait with interior design you may well think it is impossible to create a look that is both modern and traditional.
