7 Tips to Choosing a Kid-Friendly Sofa

By Darlings Of Chelsea

When choosing a new sofa, you approach it very differently if you’re buying it for a family home. While style is still of real importance, there are lots of other factors that muscle their way into the equation.

Practicality and durability are now key – can your new sofa handle kids jumping up and down on it? How easy is it to clean if they (or you for that matter!) spill drinks on it? Is it big enough for the whole family to snuggle up together for a Sunday film?

The good news is that you don’t have to forego style for durability. You just need to consider it in equal measures. We’ve put together 7 tips to choosing a kid-friendly sofa – hope it helps!

Size

When there’s more than two of you trying to sit together, a spacious corner sofa can be a valuable addition to a family home. Stylish, comfortable and giving you the option of a contemporary modular sofa, classic corner sofa or leather corner sofa, not only can you all snuggle up together, but you can also kick back, relax and put your feet up once the kids have gone to bed!

Upholstery Material

One of the biggest factors when choosing a kid-friendly sofa is the type of upholstery you go for. Whether we like it or not, at some stage, something will be spilt, crumbs will make their way down the sides and dirty hands might make their mark! You may need to look at different upholstery cleaners and how to care for different types of sofas before making your final decision.

Leather Sofa

A leather sofa can be an excellent choice for those worried about potential stains – not only is it resilient and can be wiped clean, but it is also stylish, complements pretty much every colour palette and offers timeless appeal.

Fabric Sofa

If you’d prefer to go with a fabric sofa, why not make use of sofa throws, which can take the brunt of any spills and then be washed. Throws and sofa cushions can also be used to add a splash of colour to your room, providing you with style and functionality.

Sofa Colours

There are some colours that just don’t go well with kids. Whites, creams and pale pinks and blues are sadly not the most sensible choice for a family household. But that doesn’t mean you have to have a muted palette. Darker colours can still provide the wow factor – with electric blues, purples, reds and even a black sofa all great choices for hiding any mishaps while looking good at the same time.

Comfortable Sofa

And last but not least is how comfortable your sofa is. Kids have a tendency to wriggle and fidget when they’re not comfy, so make sure you bring them with you to try sitting on the sofa, giving it a good test run before you make any decisions!

A sofa will very much act as the focal point of your living room. It’s a place for you all to spend some quality time together and by factoring in the right decisions, you can ensure it serves you and your family for years to come.
