Get The Look: Ultra Modern

By Darlings Of Chelsea

If you want your home to have the look and feel of a futuristic, almost space-age lifestyle, then Ultra-Modern is the design scheme for you. This sleek, chic look is ideal for those who love minimalism and monochrome, and what things to look a clean, crisp and as functional as possible. Here’s a few things to think about when designing your Ultra-Modern space:

Clean Lines

Sleek is the word. All your surfaces should be smooth with clean, crisp lines, where you almost can’t see the joins in furniture or around elements like doorway, and in rooms such as the kitchen, where you have a lot of cupboards and drawers, choose ones that can be opened by touch rather than handles, so you don’t have anything sticking out and spoiling the flat, polished look of the finish.

Keeping things uncluttered is key. A few accessories are fine, but generally you should aim to have out on display only things that need to be there. As you can probably tell, white features heavily in this look, as does the Monochrome colour scheme, keeping the look simple, clean and sleek.

Making use of different, smooth shapes, particularly rounded spaces, can help you to utilise areas that might not normally work well in a room but also give it a more interesting look. And making use of built-in and smart technology will not only give a lot of the furniture and features the feel of coming straight out of a sci-fi film, it will again improve the functionality of your home.

Functionality

Everything should have a purpose and everything should be refined to be the best at doing whatever it is. This helps the space look uncluttered for a start, but also optimises the look and utility of the furniture and design of your room.

Fluid Shapes

Combining the idea of the clean lines, functionality and futuristic designs, a lot of the furniture will have shapes that are ergonomic and can almost look like they sink into or rise out of their surroundings. Some mid-century modern style furniture, such as the Panton Chair, is ideal for this design scheme.
