Guest Blog: Interior Colour Schemes to Match Your Personality

By Darlings Of Chelsea

Today we have a fab guest blog from our friends at Zespoke.com:

While the latest trends are undoubtedly influential when deciding on a colour scheme for your home, the very best way to create a look that you enjoy living with is to use colours that suit your character.

Every one of us is unique, and different personality traits seem to suit certain colours better than others — not to mention the fact that the colours we surround ourselves with have a huge impact on our mood.

The Vibrant Host

Are you someone who is passionate about all they do, who enjoys living life to the full, being surrounded by people and usually the life and soul of the party? Or perhaps you have a room that you’ve set aside especially for entertaining in and want to create a lively, warm feel within it?

In this case, avoid primary colours and opt for bold, warm shades. These include deep reds, burnt orange, olive green, terracotta and aubergine. Good supporting or background colours will usually be brown-based.

The Slick Organiser

Confident, super-efficient and organised to a T? If you hate clutter and enjoy a classic, uncomplicated look, a monochrome theme based predominantly on black and white will suit you well.

Working mostly with black and white pieces doesn’t mean there’s no place for colour though. Choose jade green, lemon yellow and purple – even a splash of tangerine orange – and back them up with cool greys.

The Happy-Go-Lucky Friend

If you live a life full of energy and humour, with a friendly, laid back attitude and an utter refusal to let go of childhood fun, try a pastel colour scheme.

Warm, clear and nostalgic colours – such as peaches and cream, mint green and sky blue, as well as some bolder shades such as sea blues, sunny yellows and grass green – are all good matches. If you’re worried about the whole look becoming a little too ‘ice-cream parlour’, mix in some more muted shades, such as caramel, grey and navy.

The Cool, Calm and Collected Soul

Quiet, happy in your own company, cool, calm and gently spoken – if this sounds like you (or perhaps the kind of person you strive to be), opt for subtle, relaxing shades.

Rose pink, creamy yellow, baby blue, sage green and even some bolder shades such as maroon will all work well. Pair these colours with taupe, grey and soft navy or blues with grey undertones.

Getting the Look Right

Now it’s time to decide how you’d like to combine these shades into one cohesive scheme. It’s rarely a good idea to saturate an entire room in one colour — plus it means entirely redecorating the space, should you change your mind.

Instead, incorporate colour on just one wall, or use supporting colours on the wall and inject more vibrant shades that make more of a statement in other ways.

Using furniture in a shade you love, such as a pair of colourful funky side tables, is the ideal way to add a pop of colour into your interior scheme without the look becoming overwhelming. Curtains, sofas, rugs and even smaller decorative accessories like candles, artwork, table runners and vases in your chosen colours will all have a surprisingly large impact on the colour scheme of a room.

Finally, while choosing a colour based on your personality type is a fantastic idea, it’s also useful to consider the ambience you want to create in your home. Perhaps you have a fiery, hectic personality but want to bring a sense of calm into your busy life. In this case, it might be best to stick to colours associated with a cool, relaxed personality instead.

But whatever you choose, make sure it’s all you.
