New year, new wallpaper – top trends for 2014

By Darlings Of Chelsea

If you’re using the new year as an opportunity to redecorate your home, wallpaper is perfect for creating a feature wall with ease.

Vintage wallpaper

Vintage wallpaper can still work with contemporary furnishings

Whether it’s for brightening up your hallway, creating a centrepiece for your living room, or spicing up your boudoir, there are plenty of beautiful designs out there for you to choose from. This year, it seems bright patterns and florals are in – here’s our pick of five of the best:

Vintage Wallpaper

Vintage isn’t just big in fashion and ornaments at the moment – it seems wallpaper is going down that route too. Anything from the Gatsby-inspired 20s and 30s is hot right now – think patterns, cool pastel colours and florals – pretty much anything goes. And don’t worry, you can combine contemporary furnishing with vintage decorating – just pick out key colours from the design and repeat them in your decorations.

Geometrics

Shapes are in. Sticking with the vintage theme, it seems the 60s and 70s love of geometrics is taking hold once again. Large graphic prints with a brown, orange and green colour palette will add a little 60s glam in an instant and can easily be combined with more contemporary furnishings.

Florals

Big floral block prints needn’t be reserved for grandmas and country cottages; they can be really chic and modern too. Use prints with just one or two colours if you want to keep the effect simple, though more complex, colourful designs can look stunning too. Again, just pick out certain colours in your other furnishings and paintwork.

Act natural

Soft, neutral colours are leading the way in 2014, with light tints and soft pastels dominating a lot of designer’s lookbooks. Pinks, blues, greens and lavenders are common – essentially colours that lift the room and show off your furnishings. These colours are perfect for the downstairs and look beautiful with a bold feature wall to add some colour.

3D-effect

Our fascination with 3D seems to be extending to our home, with stunning 3D-looking wallpaper designs becoming a common occurrence in top interior designer’s portfolios. Even actual 3D wallpapers are rising in prominence as people search for something a little different.
