Get the Look: Monochrome

By Darlings Of Chelsea

“Black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.”.

I think Coco Chanel said it best. Yes, monochrome is much-loved, timeless look, in both fashion and interiors. Black and white balance each other out so perfectly, this design evokes a feeling of harmony. With its neutral palette, its a great base for experimenting with patterns and layering of textures. With a few key elements, it can be surprisingly easy to achieve a truly chic finish.

Monochrome tends to keep be fairly minimalist in terms of furnishings and accessories, as this help accentuate the ‘clean lines’ it’s known for. But you can bring warmth to this design scheme with natural materials like wood, and with greenery from plants. When it comes to walls and how much of each shade to use, you may find that big blocks of black can feel a bit overwhelming, so to give the look a more delicate edge generally it’s better to work with white as the base and make black an accent, possibly with a feature wall. And to stop things looking too monotonous, be sure to use a mix of textures, patterns and perhaps a statement piece of furniture.

While some may consider it quite a cold and blank look, it’s easy to bring warm, texture and personality to the style with rugs, cushions and wall hangings. Accessories are key to break up big blocks of white or black; think photo frames, vases, cushions, candles, clocks, etc. You could even give it a modern twist and have a small splash of colour somewhere in the room – after all, rules were made to be broken.

From our range, I would recommend the Elena sofa in white, as pictured here, as it would work really well in a monochrome living room, with it clean lines and minimalistic look. Add a little extra warmth, comfort and style by placing the Creek and Pizarro cushions, both in charcoal, on it and throw down a Belle rug from our Plantation collection alongside to complete the look.

It has to be said, considering it’s a design scheme that’s premise is to stick to two basic colours, monochrome is an incredibly sophisticated and versatile look that can work in various rooms in your house, adding a new level of style and elegance.
