Top 5 Armchairs for Reading

By Darlings Of Chelsea

With the evenings drawing in, it’s fair to say summer is well and truly over. If it ever really turned up at all (I dimly recall a couple of days of sun many weeks ago…). But that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. I think of Autumn as the time when I can snuggle up in a comfy chair and get round to reading all those books that have been piling up next to my bed. But to do that, you need the right chair. It’s got to be ultra-comfy and shaped to allow you to curl up in it for hours at a time, particularly for those books that you just can’t put down. So here are our top 5 armchairs for reading in.

1) Duke Chair – part of the Content by Terence Conran collection

With its high sides at the head to hide between, The Duke chair is perfect for secluding yourself away from the world to get lost in a great book. Its big comfy seat cushion and well-padded back mean you can sit comfortably for as long as it takes you to finally tackle all 1000+ pages of War and Peace, without fear of being disturbed by the outside world.

2) Regency Wing Chair

This classy leather chair has a nice thick and firm but comfy cushion to settle into, so you can while away the hours with a classic regency era book. It’s the perfect seat to acquaint yourself with Austen, frighten yourself with Frankenstein or immerse yourself in Ivanhoe.

3) Matador Chair – part of the Content by Terence Conran collection

This fantastic, modern-looking chair is an ideal seat for an afternoon spent reading. Super for slouching back into, the Matador chair is perfect for leaning back, pulling your feet up onto the chair, placing your book against your knees and getting some good focused reading done. Perhaps with James Joyce or Samuel Beckett – something that requires your full attention.

4) Duresta Sunday Chair in Leather

Sunday Gents Chair

It’s called the Sunday Chair for a reason. This chair was meant for lazy weekends where you pass the hours engrossed in your favourite book. I suggest nothing too heavy. Something light and fun like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland or The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. After all, Sunday’s are to be enjoyed.

5) Harris Tweed Culloden Chair

With its wide back, large, comfy seat cushion and accompanying footstool, where better to put up your feet for the afternoon while you read? This kind of comfort sets you up perfectly for meandering through the likes of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, pondering on life and all its possible meanings.
