The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Cushions for Your Sofa

By Darlings Of Chelsea

Given that our sofas are the piece of furniture we retire to at the end of the day, that we curl up on to watch a movie and that we share a glass of wine with friends when socialising, it tends to be the real focal point of your living space. And if you want to take your sofa’s aesthetic up an extra notch, introducing some cushions can have a real impact.

The question is, how many cushions should you have on your sofa? And should they match your sofa in terms of colour or contrast to stand out? If you’ve ever wondered the answers to these and more, here’s the ultimate guide to choosing the perfect cushions for your sofa.

How Do I Choose Sofa Cushions?

This is the fun part! Ideally, you want your sofa cushions to complement your existing décor. For example, if you were looking for grey sofa cushion ideas, there are lots of different options. As grey is a serene, calming colour, you may want your sofa cushions to really pop, with the likes of mustard yellows, burnt oranges or even neon pinks all working well with a grey sofa. As well as the colour of your sofa, look at ways your cushions could also complement the rest of your décor and bring it all together – whether it’s picking out some colours in your rug, artwork or even matching the green of your house plants!

How many cushions should you have on your sofa?

There is no hard and fast rule about how many sofa cushions you should have – it is largely down to the size of your sofa and personal preference. Cushions should enhance your sofa and make you more comfortable, so it’s not ideal to have so many cushions you can’t sit back and fully relax! It also depends on the size of the cushions, if you opt for large sofa cushions, it may be the case that less is more.

If you have a two-seater sofa, consider two to four cushions – two will create a more minimal look, three is more contemporary and edging towards eclectic, while four gives you plenty of options, from spreading them across the sofa to having two on either side.

Should Cushions on a Sofa Match?

Again, the choice is yours! It really depends on the look you’re going for. If you want your cushions to bring some colour and personality to your space, don’t be afraid to choose bold contrasting colours that really pop. If you want your cushions to simply provide additional comfort but blend into your space, two cushions of the same colour may be the right choice.

How to Arrange Cushions

Once you’ve decided how many cushions you’d like on your sofa, have a play around with how to arrange them. It may be that you group them together, to really draw the eye, or if you have four of differing shapes and sizes, you may have one large one at one end and three smaller ones together. You may opt for two at either end – it’s all about comfort, style and ensuring it fits into the vision you have for your living space.

What Size Cushions for My Sofa

As living room accessories, the size of your cushions depends on how you plan to use them. Are they purely decorative or will you be using them to relax back onto when you sit down? While bigger cushions can look the part in terms of aesthetic, if they’re really big there won’t actually be that much room for you to sit down! However, if you’re planning on moving them/taking them off your sofa, a larger sofa cushion could be the right choice for you.
