  • Choosing the right Chesterfield sofa?

An undeniable showstopper, Chesterfield sofas have it all. With a statement design, timeless style, and a generous seat depth to sink into, these iconic sofas provide the wow factor on both looks and comfort alike. Popular since the 1700s, the Chesterfield sofa has evolved over the centuries. While a leather Chesterfield sofa is unquestionably the most popular option, working beautifully in almost any setting, there are several alternatives. These options include the more modern velvet Chesterfield sofa, which exudes richness and glamour, and a fabric Chesterfield sofa, which allows you to choose any colour you want while retaining that instantly recognisable design.

With our extensive selection of over 170 different fabrics and colours, there is something available for every preference. Size options have evolved too. As well as the more traditional 2-seater Chesterfield sofa, you can now enjoy relaxing on a generously sized Chesterfield corner sofa or even impress your guests with a glamorous Chesterfield sofa bed! Regardless of the style you decide on, this iconic sofa will undoubtedly be the statement piece in your home. At Darlings of Chelsea, we use only the highest-quality materials and fine British craftsmanship to create something truly outstanding.

    What is a Chesterfield sofa?

    Expand

A Chesterfield is a style of sofa typically characterised by deep buttoning and rolled arms that are the same height as the back.

Although traditionally upholstered in dark leather, Chesterfield sofas are now available in different types of fabrics and styles.

    Are Chesterfield sofas comfortable?

    Expand

Yes! Chesterfield sofas have come a long way since they were first created, and the modern version of this sofa can be incredibly comfortable. They now come with sprung cushions and ample foam filling, as well as a variety of fabric options, including plush velvet.

What are the different types of Chesterfield sofas?

    Expand

Browse our vast selection of traditional Chesterfields and Chesterfield-inspired sofas with a modern twist.

We offer a range of sizes, from classic 2-seaters to extra large sofas. You can also find Chesterfield sofa beds and Chesterfield corner sofas available in a variety of colours and styles.

How do I style a Chesterfield sofa?

    Expand

The timeless design of a Chesterfield sofa will elevate the interior of any space.

The classic dark leather Chesterfields bring a masculine, sophisticated look, perfect for studies and rooms with traditional interiors. The leather goes beautifully with wooden coffee tables and brown or neutral colours.

Velvet Chesterfields, on the other hand, can be styled in a more contemporary, chic way. For example, an emerald green velvet paired with contrasting accents will add glamour to any space.

Fabric Chesterfields can bring a more relaxed and cosy vibe. Choose a grey or neutral sofa for a Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic, and play around with colours or textures to accessorise.

What is the history of Chesterfield sofas?

    Expand

Dating back nearly 300 years, Chesterfield sofas are commonly believed to have been first introduced by Lord Phillip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield.

However, the popularity of this sofa has truly peaked in the mid-19th century, during the Victorian era. It became a staple in aristocratic homes and gentlemen’s clubs, and was even featured in the infamous Balmoral Castle in 1857.

Although widely appreciated for their elegance, Chesterfield sofas were originally constructed very differently to how we know them today. Stuffed with horse hair and upholstered with tough leather, the sofa was nowhere near as comfortable. Interestingly, there is a theory that this was deliberate, since Chesterfields were commonly used in offices and waiting areas, where visitors should not get too comfortable.

Today, Chesterfield sofas are just as popular and can be found in a variety of different environments, from homes to hotel lobbies. With a wider selection of materials and styles available, Chesterfields can be the perfect addition to both traditional and modern interiors!

What is the best material for a Chesterfield sofa (leather or fabric)?

    Expand

The material you choose for your Chesterfield sofa will depend on your individual style and preferences.

Leather is the most traditional option, known for its hard-wearing properties and a uniquely sophisticated look.

Fabrics can offer an increased level of comfort and warmth, particularly such options as velvet or soft wool. However, depending on the material, fabric sofas can be less durable and require more maintenance than leather.

How do I clean a leather Chesterfield sofa?

    Expand

Different types of leather require different care, so please carefully read your care label for specific instructions and products you may use.

Generally, however, leather Chesterfield sofas can be simply wiped down with a multi-fibre cloth. In case of spillages, lightly dab the area with a paper towel, without rubbing it.

Pigmented or protected, semi-aniline leather can also be vacuumed, and mild soap can be used to remove grease. To get rid of food stains, try sprinkling it with flour or talcum powder and leaving for several hours to draw them out.

Having a ball pen remover on hand is always useful for ink stains, as these can be difficult to remove when left for too long.

How do I choose the right size Chesterfield sofa?

    Expand

We recommend measuring the room where the sofa will go, making sure it will not overpower it and leaving enough space to comfortably move around it.

You should also measure the doorways and staircases in your home, ensuring that the sofa will fit when being delivered.

What is the delivery process like?

    Expand

The delivery varies, but typically, our sofas are delivered in 4-8 weeks. Please read the product description for exact delivery times.

Once ready for delivery, we will send out some time slots, so you can pick the time that works best for you.

On the day of delivery, our team will put and assemble the sofa in your chosen room. We can also take away and recycle the packaging for you.

Are Chesterfield sofas suitable for pets or children?

    Expand

Chesterfield sofas can be a great option for households with children or pets.

We have family-friendly leather and stain-resistant fabric options available.

Can I customise a Chesterfield sofa?

    Expand

Absolutely! Darlings of Chelsea specialise in bespoke furniture, allowing you to create a sofa that represents your style and personality perfectly.

You can customise such elements as size, fabrics or leathers, feet, and other finishes.

How long does a Chesterfield sofa last?

    Expand

Chesterfield sofas are known to stand the test of time, particularly when made with the finest leather. However, even when upholstered in fabric, well-maintained furniture can serve you for decades to come.

Which colour is best for a Chesterfield sofa?

    Expand

Dark leather is undoubtedly the most popular choice for a classic Chesterfield sofa.

But, with so many colour options available, from brightly dyed leathers to vibrant fabrics, there is simply no single best option! Choose a colour that represents you and your personality.

What to pair with a Chesterfield sofa?

    Expand

A classic leather Chesterfield sofa will go beautifully with a Chesterfield-style footstool or a sophisticated leather armchair. To accompany them, consider a sleek wooden coffee table.

Fabric Chesterfield sofas can be paired with a variety of different styles, both contemporary and traditional. Play around with colours and textures based on your existing interior.
